On September 1, Tallinn Tõnismäe Reaalkool held ceremonial events to mark the start of the new school year. A total of seven ceremonies were held for different grade levels, and the day concluded with the most heartfelt and eagerly anticipated event—the ceremony for our first-graders. It was a beautiful, joyful, and special day, filled with encounters, smiles, and excitement. Particularly symbolic is our school’s lovely tradition, in which 12th-grade students escort our youngest classmates to their first-grade classrooms. On this day, the older students serve as guides for the little ones in a new and still somewhat unfamiliar world—the world of school, which is full of learning, discovery, friendship, achievements, and major school events.
Children today spend a very large part of their time at school. Therefore, school is not just a place where we acquire knowledge and new skills. School is also a place where we learn to be considerate of one another, maintain friendships, overcome challenges, believe in ourselves, take care of ourselves, and be mindful of the people around us. Our school principal, Kairi Jakobson, focused on this very idea in her welcome address. She wished the students many new successes, achievements, and the courage to move forward in the new school year. At the same time, she reminded us that in addition to results and goals, how we feel along this journey is also important. Let’s not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are a natural part of learning and growth. They give us the opportunity to learn, try again, and become stronger.
It’s important to have the courage to try new things and not be afraid if things don’t work out right away the first time. It’s also important to choose a workload that’s manageable and balanced, to listen to yourself, to take care of your well-being, and to make time for rest. Success isn’t just about achievements and good results—it’s just as important to maintain your energy, your joy in learning, and your desire to keep moving forward. And, of course, don’t forget to notice the people around you who need support. Sometimes a kind word, a little attention, or a helping hand can mean the world to someone else. Together, as one big family, we can overcome any challenge.

We are fortunate to have a large and close-knit school community. It includes students, teachers, and parents. Each of us is important, and each of us contributes to our school life. It is precisely by working together that we create an environment where it is good to learn, work, develop, and grow.
Today was a very special day for our first-graders. Today, the school bell rang for the first time for them, marking the beginning of a whole new chapter in their lives. We hope their school years will be filled with the joy of discovery, friendship, fun events, new knowledge, and many wonderful memories!
